What is our country’s role in the world? How does our foreign policy affect trade, migration, conflict and environmental issues? How are the political and social trends in our nation reflected around the globe?

Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs.  The course model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book on your own (approx. 15 pages a week), watching a 30 minute documentary together then discussing what we have learned.  New and exciting in 2023, volunteers Bob Shallenberg and Jane Perkins are lining up occasional Guest Speakers for both the afternoon and evening course (dates TBD).  This 9 week course, created by the Foreign Policy Association to educate the public about current events, includes the following topics for 2023 (exact dates for each topic TBD):

  • Mandatory Orientation -- Monday, January 30, 2-3:30pm (course materials will be distributed at this time)
  • Energy Geopolitics
  • War Crimes
  • China and the U.S.
  • Economic Warfare
  • Politics in Latin America
  • Global Famine
  • Iran at a Crossroads
  • Climate Migration

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!  Registration will open at 10am on January 3, 2023 on this same webpage.  All participants must have an active Summit County Library card.  Library cards are free for Summit County residents/employees and $25/year for nonresidents. Class size is limited to 30 participants, first come first served.

All classes will be held in the Auditorium of the Kimball Junction Branch Library, and we ask that participants commit to attending a minimum of 6 classes in addition to the Mandatory Orientation.  We will meet for 9 consecutive Mondays, 2-3:30pm starting January 30 -- except we will not have class on Presidents Day, February 20.  Our last class will be April 3. Class participation and diverse viewpoints are welcome!  Please contact Murph at smurphy@summitcounty.org or 435-336-3069 if you have any questions.

THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN GENEROUSLY FUNDED BY THE SUMMIT COUNTY FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY.  THANK YOU FRIENDS!
